about

Not the festival “Woodstock”, but a crappy bar named Woodstock. Phÿcus were invited to play by our pals from Skull Fracture, and it was a good way to end the Trans-National Disembraining Tour, with a no-pressure hometown gig.

The mid 90’s were tough for local bands. Bars start implementing a “pay-to-play” policy, which meant that basically everyone except the band got paid from the money collected at the door. Also, audiences preferred “tribute” bands and “unplugged” nights. Case in point: there were about 40 or 50 people at this gig, but in Woodstock’s second room, a Kiss cover band was playing to a packed house. A friend of the band came to see us after the show and said he had just come from a Voivod gig down the street, which had an even smaller audience. Voivod!

Anyway, it looks like the soundman had “unplugged” fever, because the backing tapes are almost imperceptible in the mix. The result is actually pretty great. The sound has a real raw feeling and we can really hear what Foe, Kristian and Bertrand are doing.

Phÿcus was a Canadian industrial / experimental band that existed from 1988 to 2000. Phÿcus transformed from the traditional band format into a network that included over 50 contributors in a dozen locales, with Montreal as its centre of operations. Phÿcus' success was minimal, but their output was prodigious. Now in 2020, Phÿcus is back with a new release, "CrowleyWood". ... more
