about

The Phÿcus fire sale! A free show at the Terminal club in Montreal to make up for the one that was cancelled due to evacuation.

On Feb. 26, Phÿcus' Montreal date during their "World Burning Tour" was postponed when a fire mysteriously broke out in the abandoned restaurant underneath the club. Let it be known that rumours of our involvement in the fire have never been substantiated. Strangely enough, this event takes place as planned.

Double vocals and triple drumming in the last part of the set!

After the gig, we asked for the tape of the show, but we were told that there wasn’t one. The next night, Thierry went to Terminal for another gig – and heard the tape of our show from the night before! When the DJ wasn’t looking, Thierry re-appropriated the cassette to its rightful owners.

This show is notable for the contribution of Monty Cantsin (Istvan Kantor). Phÿcus had been in contact with Monty since the Halifax days, exchanging propaganda and mail art. Phÿcus found a kindred spirit in Monty as both Phÿcus and Monty sang about the nature of art. In September 1991, Brian moved into Monty’s place, “The Neoist Embassy” on rue Lajoie in Outremont. They stayed there until July 1992 when the landlord had them evicted under the pretenses that his brother-in-law was moving in. Brian then moved in with Claude from Terra Vox, and Monty moved to Toronto.

This show also marked the first time Brian used the stage name “Damage” – a suggestion from Foe. Previously, he had been using a variety of stage names, none of which stuck.

Phÿcus Montreal, Québec

Phÿcus was a Canadian industrial / experimental band that existed from 1988 to 2000. Phÿcus transformed from the traditional band format into a network that included over 50 contributors in a dozen locales, with Montreal as its centre of operations. Phÿcus' success was minimal, but their output was prodigious. Now in 2020, Phÿcus is back with a new release, "CrowleyWood". ... more
