about

Over the Xmas break in in 1986, I got together with Art Damage (Matthew Claener) in his parent’s attic to record some material. The plan was to record a new track, ‘The Tar Pond Monster’ for the soundtrack to a theatre performance that was in production by Sydney author Weldon Bona (the theatre performance did not happen). Matthew had a LOT better setup than I had in my basement, including a Yamaha drum machine, a Fostex 4-track and a Yamaha DX-7. I brought my MG and Casio as well. The programming and engineering was mostly done by Matthew. I contributed to the programming, played some live keyboards and sang. Happy with the result, we used the rest of the time to re-record three tracks from the 1985 cassette. ‘The Data Strangler Theme’ sounds better re-recorded, I think, and ‘Refrigerators’ benefits from the extra clarity.

To mark this cassette as a collaboration, the band name was changed from B.M. (my initials) to B.M (Brian & Matthew).

The cassette was launched at Weldon’s annual ‘Deck The Halls’ party in 1986, but we figured that if we put the copyright year as 1986, the tape would quickly become yesterday’s news, so we opted to officially give it a 1987 release date. A ‘real’ cassette release, we made about a dozen copies, and even sold a couple.

Phÿcus' success was minimal, but their output was prodigious. Now in 2020, Phÿcus is back with a new release, "CrowleyWood". ... more
