about

The Attic

These tracks were recorded during the Xmas break in 1987 in Art Damage’s attic on a Fostex X-15 4 track, and, besides a handful of copies given to friends, were never made publicly available. Unlike the previous B.M releases, this one was a real collaborative effort between myself and Matthew (Art Damage). There was no sequencing on this one, everything was played live. Generally, we started by recording the drums and main keyboard line onto a stereo track, then overdubbed additional keyboards and vocals.

Side One:
01 The Party at George the Knight’s House (BM87)
The sequel to ‘George The Knight’. Fortunately, Matthew vetoed the idea of doing a concept album about George The Knight’s Quests.

02 The Attic Theme (BM87)
An improv in the Attic.

03 Let It Roll (BM87)
Even though this song is kinda dumb, I think it’s interesting to note that just a few years after Kraftwerk sang about using a home computer to ‘Beam myself into the future’, we sang about computers being part of the daily routine, with a nod to hacking as well.

04 Preppies (BM87)
The 80’s, man. Jocks vs. Preppies was real! Belonging to neither group, I found my place with the Freaks, who were mostly metalheads.

05 I Hate History (BM87)
I really did hate history, and apparently, also my prof, Mr. Reynolds. What’s bizarre is that during the 90’s I was being interviewed by a guy named Paul Reynolds, who happened to be his son! The conversation turned to life in Sydney, and he realized that I was the guy who anonymously dropped off an early version of this track in his dad’s mailbox. I would love to have a copy of that tape. Mr. Reynolds, if you’re out there, all is forgiven. I hope.

06 Campain Theme (BM87)
Even though it’s obvious that I ripped off the riff to ‘Blister In The Sun’, I want to be clear that I didn’t do it intentionally. I always thought that the Violent Femmes were a terrible band and there’s no way I would do them any favours by musically quoting them.

Side Two:
07 The Man In The Mask (BM87)
A tribute to my hero, Nash The Slash.

08 Too Stunned To Be Confused (BM87)
Sorry, too much Devo! I still like them, though.

09 This Place (BM87)
An early version of this track appears as a bonus on the first B.M cassette and was re-recorded for these sessions.

10 A Three-Legged Man Carrying a Chicken Across The Road (BM87)
Another improv in the Attic.

11 Diagonal Lines And Fate (BM87)
Another improv in the Attic.

Bonus tracks recorded by Matthew and myself in 1987 and 1988:

12 My Roommate (BM87)
Louis really was my roommate, and yeah, he was kinda weird, but we got along fine. The spider really existed, pretty much everything else was fictional.

13 Reid Fleming (BM87)
Reid Fleming was a comic book about ‘The World’s Toughest Milkman’ by Dave Boswell and I took a lot of inspiration from its titular character. I had heard that there were plans to make a Reid Fleming movie, so I decided to write the theme song.

14 Breakfast Invention (BM87)
15 No Chair Face Blues (BM87)
16 World’s Worst Song (BM87)
17 Hell Is Just Other People (BM87)
These tracks were mostly improvs based on some loose ideas we had. They mostly sound like loose ideas.

18 Death Fix (BM87)
One of Matthew’s tracks, subsequently re-recorded by Fat Cat, which was a band consisting of Phill Walling (Phollip Willing PA), Ken Syanide, John MxMaster, Matthew and I.

Phÿcus Montreal, Québec

Phÿcus was a Canadian industrial / experimental band that existed from 1988 to 2000. Phÿcus transformed from the traditional band format into a network that included over 50 contributors in a dozen locales, with Montreal as its centre of operations. Phÿcus' success was minimal, but their output was prodigious. Now in 2020, Phÿcus is back with a new release, "CrowleyWood". ... more
