In 1991, Monty Cantsin and Brian Damage were evicted from the Neoist Embassy in Outremont. Monty moved to Toronto to a former warehouse space on Wabash Ave with neoist Chef, Gordon W. Together, they staged a series of art events called Ständchen - The Nitemuzax Series.
For the third Ständchen event, Phÿcus were invited to perform. The theme was “irritainment, abusement and vexstacy”. There were also performances from Monty Cantsin and Bauhutte Klangzejt 2000 (Gordon W.). This is mostly the classic Montreal lineup, with the exception that Foe did not make the trip, and was replaced on drums by Todd Heunde, who played percussion with Phÿcus on a semi-regular basis between 91 and 94.
The show was recorded on video, by Gordon W (who can be heard making the occasional comment, like “My, how uplifting” at the end of “Destroy the Earth”), using Monty's camera. Monty had a pro camera so the image and sound is much better than most shows we recorded on VHS back in the day. Stereo, too!
Because the camera was close to the stage, the live elements are heard more than anything else, giving the resulting recording a raw, percussive feel.
After about a year, The Monastery shut down and Gordon W moved to Berlin, where he runs a restaurant, Der Imbiss W, and occasionally does music. If you have heard the Einstürzende Neubauten song “Dingfest”, that's Gordon on backing vocals!

band format into a network that included over 50 contributors in a dozen locales, with Montreal as its centre of operations. Phÿcus' success was minimal, but their output was prodigious. Now in 2020, Phÿcus is back with a new release, "CrowleyWood"....more
