about

“SLUDGE” was the sixth official Phÿcus release, timed to coincide with the 5th anniversary of Phÿcus’ formation. Starting with “SLUDGE”, Phÿcus released something on every March 15th until the dissolution of the band.

While it appeared in the Terra Vox catalog, it was in fact a self-bootleg compilation of obscurities that was available free to anyone who sent us a blank cassette and return postage. A handful of people took us up on the offer.

All the material on “SLUDGE” has been previously issued (or will soon be issued) on other Phÿcus archival releases. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the amount of material Phÿcus has released, here’s a good place to start.

The original liner notes follow (with some additional info in parentheses).

Side One (The Halifax Years 1988 – 1989)

01 Locked Out Of My House (SLUDGE)
A True Story. The first Phÿcus song, recorded march 13, 1988 features Bruce X on voice and keyboard and Brian Damage on keyboards and drum machine. (Previously released on TREE.)

02 Escalate (SLUDGE)
Recorded that same night. (Previously released on TREE.)

03 Grandmaster Phÿcus (SLUDGE)
The original version of this song, which has been completely re-done at least four times. Features Scott Righteous on drum pads. These 3 songs first appeared on “TREE”, released May 1988, and was originally sold wrapped in wire between two bricks. (Previously released on “Leonomorphic”.)

04 Sewer Sucker (SLUDGE)
Recorded live on Halloween night, 1988. The line-up: bruce X on guitar, SPK-553 on metal, Scott Righteous on drums, Brian Damage on keyboards and Bill Abominog on things. Released as “OktoberPhycus”, November 1988. (Previously released on “OktoberPhycus”.)

05 Dummies (SLUDGE)
Recorded live on Halloween night, 1988. The line-up: bruce X on guitar, SPK-553 on metal, Scott Righteous on drums, Brian Damage on keyboards and Bill Abominog on things. Released as “OktoberPhycus”, November 1988. (Previously released on “OktoberPhycus”.)

06 World Full of Nothing (SLUDGE)
Recorded early 1989, basically the same line-up as OktoberPhycus, minus Bill. Released as “Phycus Phlegm Time”, March 1989. (Previously released on “Phlegm Time And Beyond”.)

07 Good Morning, Garbage Chute (SLUDGE)
Recorded early 1989, basically the same line-up as OktoberPhycus, minus Bill. Released as “Phycus Phlegm Time”, March 1989. (Previously released on “Phlegm Time And Beyond”.)

08 Start Digging (SLUDGE)
The first Phÿcus material to use sequencer as well as sampler. Features SPK-553 on voice and Brian damage on electronics. (Previously released on “Start Digging”.)

09 Change Your Life (SLUDGE)
The first Phÿcus material to use sequencer as well as sampler. Features SPK-553 on voice and Brian damage on electronics. (Previously released on “Start Digging”.)

10 Requiem (SLUDGE)
Then we had to return the sequencer. These songs were released on “Kinder! Gentler! Now!”, our biggest-selling cassette at that time (15 copies). (Previously released on “Leonomorphic”.)

Side Two (Montreal Material 1990 – 1992)

11 Start Digging ’91 (SLUDGE)
Released on the UBIK compilation cassette “Collectiv One”. (Previously released on “Start Digging”.)

13 Satan, Show Me The Way (SLUDGE)
Among the first material recorded in Montreal, features Bill Abominog on voice thang. (Previously released on “War On Drgs”.)

14 Another System (SLUDGE)
We recorded a cassette’s worth of material as “The Phÿcus Jazz Trio”, but never released it. The line-up: Arthur Damage, Bruce X and Brian Damage. (Previously released on “The Phÿcus Jazz Trio”.)

15 Cold Tounges (SLUDGE)
Recorded live at the release of “BURN”, halloween, 1991. Features Foe Noumenon on vocals, Thierry Über-Gauthier on guitar, Brian Damage on keyboards, and Bill Abominog on percussion. (Previously released on “Industrial Hell”.)

Both of these songs were recorded at about the same time – spring ’91 – and originally intended for “BURN”, but not included. (Previously released on “Empty Temples”.)

17 Nerves (SLUDGE)
Both of these songs were recorded at about the same time – spring ’91 – and originally intended for “BURN”, but not included. (Previously released on “BURN”.)

18 You’re A Drug (SLUDGE)
Recorded shortly after “BURN”. For this song, we used the sequence for “Blood Crave” sped up, plus a different melody line. (Previously released on “Effluviator”.)

19 You Got It Made (SLUDGE)
Recorded for “Effluviator”, but not used. Features Todd Heunde on analog keyboard, Bill Abominog on digital keyboard, and Brian Damage on drum machine. (Previously released on “Techno Traxxxxxx”. The track was incorrectly listed on “SLUDGE” as “Xmas Rave”.)

about

Phÿcus Montreal, Québec

Phÿcus was a Canadian industrial / experimental band that existed from 1988 to 2000. Phÿcus transformed from the traditional band format into a network that included over 50 contributors in a dozen locales, with Montreal as its centre of operations. Phÿcus' success was minimal, but their output was prodigious. Now in 2020, Phÿcus is back with a new release, "CrowleyWood". ... more
