about

Jubal told us about this club in Toronto that was free to play, called the Shanghai. Scott was skeptical, since it was a club on the third floor of a commercial building where you had to take an elevator to get to. We booked it anyway, and sent them a basic rider, mostly stating that the club would include the gig in their promotion. We asked them to sign it and send it back. They didn’t.

Brian drove from Ottawa to Montreal to pick up Bad Bill and Steve Markowski. There was squabbling on the way back to Ottawa, as no one had any money whatsoever. When we got to Ottawa to pick up gear from Brian’s place and our keyboardist, Jester Sven (Dave Brown), Steve quit the band. He just left the car and decided he would rather hitch-hike back to Montreal than do the gig. Afterwards, Brian told him that he was right to bail on such a shitty gig, so all was well and Steve was welcomed back in the band for the next gig.

Anyways, we get to the club, and for sure, they did absolutely no promotion. The only people in attendance were Sherri Higgins, Scott Righteous and his date and Jubal Brown and his date. Scott and Jubal joined us on stage so there were actually more people onstage than in the audience. No matter, Phÿcus was in top form, and we took it outside for the final number, entitled « Burn To The Ground ». Jubal took pity on us and took us out for a late nite snack, bought some merch, and promised us some better gigs.

This gig is also notable for being one of the first appearances of Jester Sven in the band.

Concert filmed by Sherri Higgins. Sound has been extracted from the video.

Phÿcus transformed from the traditional band format into a network that included over 50 contributors in a dozen locales, with Montreal as its centre of operations. Phÿcus' success was minimal, but their output was prodigious. Now in 2020, Phÿcus is back with a new release, "CrowleyWood". ... more
