about

Phÿcus opening for Kubelka at the Saw Gallery, Ottawa, August 20, 1999.

Kubelka was a three-pice post-rock outfit featuring Darren Peacock, Joel taylor (the New Humourist) and Alex Moskos (later of The Unireverse, AIDS Wolf, Drainolith and Dan’l Boone). And they were on fire that night!

Phÿcus delivered a full-on power electronics set, with a couple notable tracks. Generally, Phÿcus didn’t dig into their back catalog when planning shows. We always preferred to play our new material, and we didn’t really have the type of audience that cried out for the “Hits”. But, check it out, “Dominoes” is track 3, a piece written some ten years earlier, and a pretty blistering version to boot. Also of note is the joke breakbeat track “Noise It Up, G”, featuring a variation on the Amen beat that Jason took from a toy beatbox. This is essentially the same set as was played opening for MSBR a couple months earlier.

Phÿcus' success was minimal, but their output was prodigious. Now in 2020, Phÿcus is back with a new release, "CrowleyWood". ... more
