about

“Only Fire And Death” (MPCD 991) was issued March 15th 1999 to mark Phÿcus’ 11th anniversary in an edition of 50 copies. This was Phÿcus’ first release on CDr, and 17th release overall (not including compilations).

All the tracks were recorded live during Phÿcus’ 10th anniversary and “X” tours. “Only Fire And Death” was originally intended to be released as a VCD (video CD), but home computer technology of 1999 wasn’t quite up to the task, so it came out on CDr instead.

For this release, most of the tracks were taken from the original video masters and remastered in 2017.

Sonically, “Only Fire And Death” was inspired by Phÿcus’ Hungarian experimental shows. Phÿcus used the “X” tour to say goodbye to their more classic industrial style, often presenting their old material in radically deconstructed fashion, and introduced the audience to a new sound inspired more by harsh noise and power electronics.

Thanks to Jubal Brown for organizing the Wasteland events and the performance at OCAD. Also thanks to Ken Takahashi for organizing the Gallery 101 performance.

Artwork by BruSex, who made four different covers for the CD. The other three covers are provided as bonus items on the digital release.

about

Phÿcus Montreal, Québec

Phÿcus was a Canadian industrial / experimental band that existed from 1988 to 2000. Phÿcus transformed from the traditional band format into a network that included over 50 contributors in a dozen locales, with Montreal as its centre of operations. Phÿcus' success was minimal, but their output was prodigious. Now in 2020, Phÿcus is back with a new release, "CrowleyWood". ... more
