about

“Nihilist Action” was the second – and final - cassette from Vermiform Front, released on the Musicus Phÿcus label (MPCS 962) on April 15 1996.

Vermiform Front was a collaboration between Alan Bloor from Knurl (bass and metal), Steve Markowsky (tapes and metal) and Brian Damage (vocals and metal). The goal was to create the most nihilistic music possible, stripped of all of its usual trappings. In true nihilist form, Vermiform Front took all that was wrong with the world – greed, murder, environmental destruction, corporate corruption – and used it as the subject matter of the songs.

This cassette has a running theme of gun culture. Most of the lyrical ideas came from Steve. Of note are a couple tracks: “Electronic Eugenics” is the sound of Alan plugging his bass into channel four of our four-track recorder. It exploded and caught fire! We decided that if channel four couldn’t handle the rock, then it deserved to burn! In the mid 90’s there was this popular Tshirt that a lot of the industrial kids were wearing (probably a KMFDM shirt) that had some kind of self-describing slogan on the back of it, something like “Techno Industrial Terrorist” or “Typical Rivethead Conformist” on it. Steve wondered what he would use as a self-describing slogan and came up with Vermiform front’s signature song “Power Noise Sadist”.

Vermiform Front released two cassettes, appeared on the “Multipurpose Saws” compilation and performed a handful of shows before disbanding in the summer of 1996 when Alan moved to Toronto and Brian to Ottawa.

All tracks by Vermiform Front, except “Consumer Regulations” based on “Individual Consumption”, by Phÿcus. This tape set the standard of lyrical minimalism that was used for most of the tracks on Phÿcus’ “X” LP.
