about

In March 1995, Phÿcus was invited to play at the Music Gallery in Toronto as part of a series of concerts presented by the label Freedom In A Vacuum. This series also included performances by Dive, Edward Ka-spel, Orphx and others.

When the curator of the series, Robert Olver, was asked what he thought of Phÿcus’ performance, the best he could muster was “Well, you never know what to expect”. Who knows why his response was so lukewarm, because this was a great performance from Phÿcus.

Phÿcus took advantage of the Music Gallery’s stockroom to bring out the tympanis, which Scott played on “No (More!) Pain”, we had Knurl start the show with a solo, and it was the first Phÿcus show where Brian breathed fire onstage. There was a practice backstage before the show (witnessed by Neil Wiernik), a not-very-successful attempt during “This Is The Burn”, and a more successful blast during “Conspiracy Of Noise”.

Anyway, Rob Olver was really nice to us, so no problem. Very nice stereo room recording, including 20 minutes of audience chatter after the set, where one can hear, among others, Monty Cantsin and Sherri Higgins.

about

Phÿcus Montreal, Québec

Phÿcus was a Canadian industrial / experimental band that existed from 1988 to 2000. Phÿcus transformed from the traditional band format into a network that included over 50 contributors in a dozen locales, with Montreal as its centre of operations. Phÿcus' success was minimal, but their output was prodigious. Now in 2020, Phÿcus is back with a new release, "CrowleyWood". ... more
