about

“Late Night Live” was a series a live performances on the “Late Night Atrocity Exhibition” radio programme on CKUT FM Montreal, hosted by Brian Damage. The series began as a one-off performance by Claude Charnier’s project “Maschinenhaus” in the summer of 1993, and became a regular monthly feature on the show from August 1994 (AKA Inc.) until October 1995 (Insurgent). The Phÿcus performance – an atypically subdued affair – was recorded July 7, 1995.

02 Mental Illness (Late Nite Live)
03 Alas (Late Nite Live)
04 Re-tox (Late Nite Live)
05 This Is The Burn (Late Nite Live)

Bonus tracks include a few other performances from the series:

06 Skull Fracture – Deceptive Obsession
Recorded November 1994. Skull Fracture were part of a wave of bands influenced by the Terra Vox sound that sprung up in the early 90’s. It was a trio of Marc, Brent and Alex. Alex later went solo with a project called "Creature Androgyne", which was also scheduled for a "Late Nite Live" session which unfortunately did not happen.

07 FSK 1138 - Intro / Technology
Recorded December 1994. FSK-1138 is the solo project of Thomas Baynes, who was influenced by futurism. He basically brought his studio with him to record this set.

08 Knurl – Knurl Late Nite Live (Late Nite Live)
Recorded February 1995. Knurl is the solo project of Alan Bloor, who started doing noise in the mid-80’s, as is recognized as “Canada’s King Of Noise”. This set features the sound of a fan captured by crappy headphones and fed through a series of pedals.

09 Project Z – Track 1 (Late Nite Live)
Recorded May 1995. Project Z was the project of a guy named Michel. He was kind of a nerdy guy, influenced mostly by techno, Klaus Schultz and Jean-Michel Jarre. We probably considered his stuff “lightweight” back in the day, but it’s actually pretty great.

10 Zaraza - Nova Akropola (Late Nite Live)
Recorded June 1995. Zaraza, a duo of Jacek The Doomhammer and Grzergoz Haus Ov Doom, did a tribute to Laibach in their trademark style, which they describe as “brutal symphonic industrial doom metal”.

Phÿcus transformed from the traditional band format into a network that included over 50 contributors in a dozen locales, with Montreal as its centre of operations. Phÿcus' success was minimal, but their output was prodigious. Now in 2020, Phÿcus is back with a new release, "CrowleyWood". ... more
