about

Buttmower was Phÿcus tenth official release on cassette, released March 15th 1996 on the Musicus Phÿcus label (MPCS961), in a numbered edition of 29 copies. It given to Phÿcus members and close friends to mark Phÿcus’ 8th anniversary. A handful of copies were also available for sale to the general public.

Phÿcus often included covers in their live sets and on their cassettes, but this is the only Phÿcus release comprised entirely of covers. Phÿcus covers generally fell into three categories: Covered because the song was great and needed to be brought to the Phÿcus audience, covered because a Phÿcus interpretation brought new meanings to the original material, and covered because Phÿcus needed to destroy the song.

01 Working Man (Buttmower)
(Rita McNeil) A friend of ours played this version of “Working Man” for Rita McNeil. Her reaction: “When it first started, I didn’t see how this could be Working Man. Afterwards, I thought, well, that was different”.

02 How Soon Is Now (Buttmower)
(The Smiths) Edited from the original 22 minute-long version (which has since been lost).

03 Pretty Flowers (Buttmower)
(Corpusse) Phÿcus first encountered Corpusse in 1994. We immediately felt a kinship and could appreciate his genius.

Side 2
04 What A Day (Buttmower)
(Throbbing Gristle) We were pleased that this one became a fan favorite. Lots of people can relate.

05 S.I.B. (Buttmower)
(Devo) Features the Moog, CZ and sampler all playing bass, all slightly out of tune with each other.

06 They're Coming To Take Me Away (Buttmower)
(Napoleon XIV) This is the third or fourth interpretation of this song recorded by Phÿcus.

07 Sol Om On (Buttmower)
(Lustmord) This is not exactly a cover, more of an interpretation of Lustmord’s style.

Bonus Tracks:
08 Tied Up (Buttmower)
(Olivia Newton-John) Recorded during the "Summer of Doom", 1994.

09 Haus Ov Doom (Buttmower)
10 Feed The Goat (Buttmower)
11 Haus Ov Doom II / Farewell My Sweet Goat (Buttmower)
These three tracks recorded Dec 1995 live on CKUT FM when Bill and Brian were filling in for Jacek (of Zaraza) on his radio show. They are not really covers, but done in the style of Zaraza. “Feed The Goat” was later recorded by Bill Abominog and Peter Azagthoth under the name “Goathead”, and covered by Phÿcus on their “X” LP.

about

Phÿcus Montreal, Québec

Phÿcus was a Canadian industrial / experimental band that existed from 1988 to 2000. Phÿcus transformed from the traditional band format into a network that included over 50 contributors in a dozen locales, with Montreal as its centre of operations. Phÿcus' success was minimal, but their output was prodigious. Now in 2020, Phÿcus is back with a new release, "CrowleyWood". ... more
