about

Active Nihilism was the first cassette from Vermiform Front, released on the Musicus Phÿcus label (MPCS 951) on August 15 1995.

Vermiform Front was a collaboration between Alan Bloor from Knurl (bass and metal), Steve Markowsky (tapes and metal) and Brian Damage (vocals and metal). The goal was to create the most nihilistic music possible, stripped of all of its usual trappings. In true nihilist form, Vermiform Front took all that was wrong with the world – greed, murder, environmental destruction, corporate corruption – and used it as the subject matter of the songs.

Vermiform Front released two cassettes, appeared on the “Multipurpose Saws” compilation and performed a handful of shows before disbanding in the summer of 1996 when Alan moved to Toronto and Brian to Ottawa.

All tracks by Vermiform front, except “World Peace Is dead” by Missing Foundation. "Neoist Assault" lyrics taken from "The Book of Neoism", written by Istvan Kantor / Monty Cantsin. “Waste Land” based on “Faktory Amerika”, lyrics by SPK-553. “Voluntary Human Extinction” provided the idea for the Phÿcus track “VHEMT”. On the original release, "Waste Land" was edited by about a minute in order to fit on the cassette. Here it is returned to it's intended 18-and-a-half minute glory.

Phÿcus transformed from the traditional band format into a network that included over 50 contributors in a dozen locales, with Montreal as its centre of operations. Phÿcus' success was minimal, but their output was prodigious. Now in 2020, Phÿcus is back with a new release, "CrowleyWood". ... more
